It's Never Too Late to Learn English

“The best time to plant a tree is twenty years ago. The second best time is now.” Benny Lewis “Fluent in 3 Months: How Anyone at Any Age Can Learn to Speak Any Language from Anywhere in the World

You might want to use English in work, communication, hobbies and just in life.  Is it too late for you to get an interesting and highly paid job? Is it too late to go on a trip around the USA and feel free there? Is it too late to continue your studies at the Universities of England, USA or communicate with people from different countries? Is it too late to start reading English books or professional literature in the original language?

I think it all comes down to motivation. “If you really want to do something, you will work hard for it”, as Edmund Hillary, New Zealand mountaineer, explorer, and philanthropist, put it. For example, Grandma Moses began to paint at the age of 76. Besides, lots of immigrants start learning English when they are 60, 70, or 80.

I have some good tips on how to push yourself to learn English:

  1. Imagine your future

This interesting psychological trick is not only for English learners. Imagine yourself in the future: you speak English at the Upper-Intermediate level. If you like to travel, you can visit English-speaking countries, you have a chance to get a better job as well. You are not shy anymore to talk to native speakers. You can  make new friends, new acquaintances, etc. Overall, you can make a better future for yourself and your family. The first step is just to start learning English.

  1. Set small goals

The English language with all its grammar, listening, and pronunciation rules is pretty complicated. To understand it, and even to speak fluently, Benny Lewis recommends dividing big tasks into smaller ones. For example:

Big task: end up having a large vocabulary.

Smaller task: learn the words for bathroom items by 5 pm and have someone test you to make sure you remember them. Then choose the next topic and learn words for it.

  1. Your reward!

When the basics are mastered, you will be surprised how many interesting things will open up right away. You are already able to start watching movies in the original language (which is much more interesting!), read adapted and unadapted books in English, start communicating with people, etc. All this is amazing and encourages you to continue learning the language!

Moreover, you can chat with native speakers on websites like http://www.interpals.net or http://www.busuu.com. Achievements will convince you that you are on the right track.

So, there are many excuses to avoid learning English but you don’t need to waste time looking for them; learning English is never too late! All limits are only in our heads. Never give up! If you want to do it, you CAN do it!
